How dare he say first of all, that white people are not oppressed? Personally, I am a single mother raising two minor children and I am not qualified to receive any free health care coverage. I have no health care at all. I am employed and working to raise my children, however, I have been told I do not qualify for health care, any food stamps or any type of assistance in the city of Chicago or for that matter from the state of Illinois. Whoever murdered these two young people should be penalized to the extreme. It is true that had it been an African American person murdered by "white" people, this would have been called a "hate crime" all over the news and the newspapers.   I am appalled by Leonard Pitts who believes all "whites" have it so much easier and better than any other race in this country. This is an absolute lie! Our taxes pay for the system of welfare and health care coverage for all others and yet I who have survived ovarian tumors as well as breast tumors cannot get my necessary mammogram every three months as required because I cannot afford it. How dare he take the tragedy of these innocent victims and act as if every "white" person has it made.   Channon Christian and Christoper Newsom were brutally tortured and murdered. There had been no news reports on television nor in our newspaper until the day I read about it in Mr. Pitts' column. It is a fact that had the roles been reversed and the couple had been "black," it would have been everywhere. As in victim of racial oppression. By any measure -- health, education, economics, employment -- white Americans enjoy a superior standard of living. And Knoxville, Tenn., has become the capital city of that lunatic fringe.   It seems that in January, a young white couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, were victims of a brutal crime. They were carjacked, kidnapped and raped. Cleaning fluid was sprayed into Christian's mouth. She was stuffed in a trash can and apparently suffocated. Newsom was shot and set afire. His body was dumped. Five blacks, one a woman, have been arrested. [Now compare this to the fake Duke Lacrosse Rape and the media coverage it enjoyed].   The story made headlines around Knoxville. It was unnoticed nationally.   That has changed. A constellation of white supremacists and conservative bloggers [As far as Pitt's is concerned anyone that is a conservative is probably a white supremacist] has pushed the story into the national limelight as illustration of their argument that news media, constrained by political correctness, refuse to report black-on-white crime while pulling out all the stops when crime is white on black, as in the Duke University lacrosse debacle.   I would see their Duke case and raise them a Central Park jogger, but what do I know?   Anyway, bloggers such as Michael Oliver have chastised the "liberal, biased, mainstream media" for missing the Knoxville story. He asked, "Had the roles been reversed, would the media ignore such a horrific crime?" [Nope]   Truth is, media ignore horrific crimes all the time. Space is limited and growing more so. Which means the story that catches fire usually has some element beyond gruesomeness to sell it. In the Duke case, it was class, privilege, sex and race that did it.   Not that I expect Oliver or other "oppressed" white people to pay attention to something so trivial as fact. [Yes, Pitt's thinks tthat if you're concerned about the enormous amount of black on white crime you are probably stupid, i.e. not interested in facts] They're too busy demanding that this case be tried as a hate crime -- even though police say there's no evidence the couple were targeted for any other reason than that they were there. And on May 26, white supremacists held -- I kid you not -- a "rally against genocide" in Knoxville.   Part of me thinks I should consider the source and let this slide. But the argument being advanced here is so utterly, abysmally, stupidly, self-servingly wrong that I cannot help but respond.   Black crime against whites is underreported? On what planet? Study after study and expert after expert tell a completely different story.   For instance, there's "Off Balance: Youth, Race and Crime in the News," a 2001 report that concluded: Blacks and Latinos are underrepresented in news media as victims of crime and significantly overrepresented as perpetrators, based on crime statistics; newspaper articles about white homicide victims are longer and more frequent than those about black ones; and interracial violent crime is more likely to be reported, even though it is just about the rarest kind of violent crime.   And here I'm obligated, because I'm black, to say that if the defendants in this case did what they are accused of doing, I'd be happy to see them rot under the jailhouse. The most recent example of this double standard was the Duke Lacrosse rape fable and its associated coverage in the media. There was not a single newspaper, news magazine, tabloid, that didn’t cover it extensively. There was not a single network news program that didn’t splash it across their screen ten thousand times during those months that Mike Nifong was still able to keep the majority of facts under wraps. There wasn’t a single radio program that didn’t broadcast every false accusation and innuendo intimately tied to the case. In the end, what did the case amount to? Hooey that’s what. Do you remember Don Imus’ “nappy headed hoes” comment? Couldn’t we safely say that it too received an incredible amount of news coverage? Didn’t all the talking heads appropriately denounce Don? Wasn’t Don forced to make a nationally televised apology to America’s black community via a face to face with Al Sharpton? In the end wasn’t Don fired? One of those on the leading edge of the Imus bashing crusade was a black Pulitzer Prize winning journalist from the Miami Herald named Leonard Pitts. In an article dated April 13, 2007 and entitled “Firing of Imus Removes Leader of Sorry Band,”[1] Pitts self righteously questioned whether or not crack cocaine hadn’t been added to the nation’s drinking water, as if Imus’ comment was affirmation that everyone in the country was crazy. Pitts then noted a very important fact associated with the Imus case; and one I intend to expand on a bit below, Pitts wrote “And then there's radio shock jock Don Imus who, as even polar bears must know by now, last week leveled racist and sexist insults against the Rutgers University women's basketball team, most of whom are black.” In the above sentence Pitts himself confirms what everyone else knows, that the Imus case received an unbelievable amount of media attention, so much attention in fact, that Pitts himself doubts whether there are any “polar bears” unfamiliar with the case. By noting this, and doing so in newspapers across the nation, as Pitts is a syndicated columnist, Pulitzer Prize winning Leonard Pitts has assigned himself the role of our moral anchor, he’s preaching to us what a racist statement is or isn’t. To reinforce his self assigned role as our moral compass, Pitts then writes that it was “beyond pathetic that two grown men [Imus and his producer] would use the reach and power afforded them as members of the media to mock the looks of a bunch of college girls” and that it was “fitting that Imus' slur has angered and energized the African-American community.”   Bear Pitts’ words in mind, because I’m going to use them below to expose a virulent and pernicious form of racism that exists in our society today that clearly reveals an obvious double standard and receives an undeserved sort of amnesty with the added caveat that whites aren’t allowed to comment on it, or at least not without being labeled a “white supremacist.” I myself can comment on this phenomenon because I’m a politically correct apostate and have given up on the religion of political correctness, and I can tell you with certainty that I find the freedom refreshing and more importantly, productive. Call me a racist if you like, I don't care. The only thing important about Pitts’ above comments is to shine the light of scrutiny on our Pulitzer Prize winner, to show that he indeed condemned Imus for calling a group of black females basketball players “nappy headed hoes.” Pitts’ is an expert at defining what a racist is you see, he’s our moral compass because the Miami Herald gives him a platform and because the mainstream media says he is. He’s above racism, or at least being accused of it, even when he is. In a recent article entitlted “Oppressed Whites, Give Me a Break,” about a black on white crime that happened in Knoxville TN last January[2] that is so horrific it’s difficult to detail, but involved the kidnapping of a young white couple, by four blacks, including a black female, and their subsequent rape [of the male as well], torture, mutilation and murder, Leonard Pitts’ clearly told white America that he couldn’t give a damn about their growing awareness of the reality of black on white crime or their concern with it. The FBI and Department of Justice’s statistics[3] clearly show that approximately 4% of the American population commits more than 50% of the homicides annually in America and that 4% represents black males between the ages of 12 and 60. His exact words [and this is important as he is a Pulitzer Prize winner after all and thus should be intimately familiar with sentence construction and context] were “I have four words for them [so-called white supremacists] and any other white Americans who feel themselves similarly victimized… Cry me a river.” When a Pulitzer Prize winner adds the inclusive “AND” and then tags “any other white Americans that feel themselves similarly victimized” along with it, he is including exactly that, any other white Americans. So, what Pitts is really saying is that he cries a river for the family of Stella [9-years-old] and Ruby [4 years-old] Harvey[4] who had their young throats slit by two blacks in a crime 99% of America never heard about that happened back in 2006 in Richmond Virginia. Like the Channon Christian and Chris Newsom murder it too received absolutely no national news coverage. Pitts is also telling the families of Jason Befort, Heather Miller, Aaron Sandler, Bradley Heyka and Linda Walenta[5], all horribly raped and murdered by two black brothers from Wichita Kansas in another “hush crime” that he “cries them a river” as well. You won’t hear Pitts mention Lindsey Bruce, a black man that raped and beheaded a 5 year old white girl named Emily Rimel, or Lanny Perry Barnes, a black man that intentionally ran over a white family in a McDonald’s parking lot, killing their 2-year old daughter with a smile on his face, and then backing up and running them over again, but if he were to cite these crimes, he’d do his best to deny that they were racially motivated and he’d “cry us a river” or possibly label us “white supremacists” if we demurred in any way from his oh so wise conclusions. Yep, our Pultizer Prize winning journalist clearly told white America that he couldn’t give a damn about our concerns and for that Pitts, like Don Imus before him should be held responsible and fired from his lucrative position at the Miami Herald. The Herald however has come out defending Pitts, they’d like you and I to believe that Pitts’ only critics are in the “white supremacist” movement, which is a joke and more to the point, highly illusory and deceptive. The Herald does not have a leg to stand on, the fact of the matter is they are attempting to bury what Pitts said as quickly as possible, but the facts are already out there, it’s only a matter of time before the Herald concludes that Pitts has become more of a liability than an asset. Rather than email and/or call the Miami Herald, I suggest that readers call and/or write to their local papers and demand that they stop publishing any of Pitts columns. Send them a copy of what Pitts wrote and explain to them you’re tiring of the obvious double standard that the media engages in. Tell them you are sickened by the hypocrisy of a man that condemns the so-called racism of whites but gives black racism a pass. Considering the above, is it not at least “pathetic,” not to mention highly irresponsible for Leonard Pitts to “use the reach and power afforded [to him] as [a] member of the media” to chastise white America and to tell them that he’ll cry them a river in respect to their concerns? Outside the home of another couple they were visiting, they were carjacked and kidnapped. Over the next 24 hours they were beaten, gang-raped, tortured and murdered. There can be little doubt that if Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom had been black and their killers white, everyone in America would know their names. Because they were white and their killers are black, their fate has been shrouded in a thick silence that has given rise to a host of lurid rumors. Their story highlights the strange and twisted nature of race relations in America, which makes it nearly impossible for the authorities or the media to deal honestly with events that violate official assumptions about race. It also represents both a strength and weakness of the Internet: Mischief-makers of various political persuasions spread falsehoods rather than correct them, but they built up a demand for facts that became so great the authorities eventually had to come clean. The men who kidnapped and killed Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom have not yet gone to trial, so they are theoretically innocent. This account—as accurate as possible under what sometimes amounted to a news blackout—is based on documents filed in federal and state courts, and on sometimes vague and contradictory press reports. These three--George Thomas, Letalvis Cobbins, and Lemaricus Davidson--are finally getting a little national attention. Sometime after midnight, Miss Christian and Mr. Newsom were in the parking lot of Knoxville's Washington Ridge apartment complex, where they were visiting friends. Letalvis Cobbins, 24, along with his brother Lemaricus Davidson, 25, and George Thomas, 24, kidnapped them at gunpoint, and carjacked Miss Christian's 2005 Toyota 4-Runner. Mr. Davidson had already been convicted of carjacking and aggravated robbery in Tennessee in 2001, but despite conviction for a death penalty-eligible offense and a bad record as an inmate, had served no more than five years in West Tennessee State Penitentiary. Recently released, he had been a member of the Black Gangster Disciples at least since prison. The three men tied up their captives and took them in the 4-Runner to a rundown rental house at 2316 Chipman Street in black East Knoxville, where Mr. Cobbins and Mr. Davidson lived. Mr. Cobbins's 18-year-old girlfriend, Vanessa Coleman, met them there. Their story highlights the strange and twisted nature of race relations in America. All four, including Miss Coleman, then engaged in an orgy of rape and violence. They anally gang-raped Mr. Newsom, and orally, anally, and vaginally gang-raped Channon Christian. They brutally beat both victims and poured cleaning fluid down Miss Christian's throat. They killed Mr. Newsom, leaving him with “multiple gunshot wounds,” and set his corpse on fire. Knoxville police refuse to say how Miss Christian was murdered, but an assistant U.S. attorney suggests she may have been “choked.” On January 8, the day after the carjacking-gang-rape-murder, Lemaricus Davidson robbed an employee of a Knoxville Pizza Hut at gunpoint, and tried to rob a customer. Likewise on January 8, Miss Christian’s father, Gary, found her Toyota 4-Runner abandoned near railroad tracks, not far from where a railroad employee found Mr. Newsom’s desecrated corpse that same day. There was a fingerprint from Lemaricus Davidson inside the vehicle, which led to a search of his apartment on January 10. There police found Miss Christian’s corpse in a garbage can in the kitchen. A fourth man, Eric Boyd, has been charged as an accessory in the carjacking case for having helped Mr. Davidson try to escape justice, but not in the rapes and murders. Knoxville authorities have promoted the view that the rapists poured cleaning fluid down Miss Christian's throat to destroy DNA evidence. They and the media have also insisted that the torture/murders were "a crime of opportunity," a carjacking that somehow got out of hand, and that the criminals had no racial motivation. This picture appears to be wrong on all counts, and is an insult to the public's intelligence. The defendants are charged with premeditated murder and, according to court documents, had already decided to kill Miss Christian before they made her swallow cleaning fluid. They also did not bother to "clean" her vagina and anus, which were stuffed with DNA evidence. The carjacking-gone-wrong theory is not plausible either. Carjacking is armed robbery of a vehicle, in order to possess or sell it, but these assailants had no interest in the 4-Runner. They dumped it after only a few hours. Nor was there any reason for things to "go wrong;" the victims cooperated, and Lemaricus Davidson was an experienced carjacker. While carjackers sometimes rape their victims, anal gang-rape is very rare, especially of male victims. On the other hand, black jail and prison inmates often target white prisoners for anal gang-rape as a method of racial terrorism (see "Hard Time," AR, April 2002). And while carjackers sometimes murder their victims, it is hard to imagine black carjackers treating black victims in such a loathsome manner. Finally, a "hate crime" is one committed "wholly or in part" for reasons of racial animus, and use of racial epithets is considered strong evidence of racial animus. Do the authorities expect us to believe that these black killers raped, tortured, and murdered white victims, without ever using racially insulting language? This reporter believes the carjacking was just a way to kidnap, gang-rape, torture and murder whites, and that the killers used the cleaning fluid for the sole purpose of further torturing Miss Christian. Until mid-May, this story was strictly local news, but it assumed a certain notoriety on the Internet where, not long after the first newspaper reports, a story with the following headline began circulating: "White Couple Abducted; Both Man and Woman Were Raped, Beaten, Cut Apart and Killed. Five Blacks Arrested In Case. No Media Frenzy Over 'Racist' Attack." The report, with photographs of the victims and the suspects, continued as follows: "The animals pictured below raped Christopher Newsom, cut off his penis, then set him on fire and fatally shot him several times while they forced his girlfriend, Channon Christian, to watch. An even more cruel fate awaited her! "Channon Christian, was beaten and gang-raped in many ways for four days by all of them, while they took turns urinating on her. Then they cut off her breast and put chemicals in her mouth . . . and then murdered her." Murder victim Christopher Newsome. The earliest version of this story seems to have appeared around February 21 on the web page of New Jersey radio host Hal Turner. Many of the details, including the amputations and urination, have not been in other reports, nor are they mentioned in court documents. I asked the Knoxville police to confirm or deny Mr. Turner's claims. Public Information Officer Darrell Debusk was unfailingly polite, but would tell me nothing. Were the victims mutilated? Were they alive or dead when this happened? "That is something that we have not discussed in public, and is information that will come to light during the trial . . . . Right now, we're not discussing the details of the investigation." Officer Debusk would not even give a cause of death: "Again, that's evidence in a trial that will be presented during the trial." (Only later did I learn from court documents that federal authorities had already reported that Mr. Newsom had been shot.) The claim that "the investigation is ongoing," was plainly untrue. The suspects had been arrested, indicted, and bound over for trial. Prosecutors bind over defendants only after the police have finished their investigation. When I asked for a copy of the Knoxville police preliminary report, which had been released to local reporters, Officer Debusk was happy to oblige--so long as I dropped by in person at department headquarters in Knoxville. If that wasn't convenient for someone living in New York State, I could have a local person pick one up for me, or a Tennessee resident could pay for a copy and ask that it be sent to an in-state address. Clearly, Officer Debusk just didn't want me to see the report. Other Knoxville officials--at the county medical examiner's office, sheriff's department, and criminal court--all referred me back to the Knoxville Police Department. Chief Sterling Owen, IV himself established this stonewalling policy, and the information has been so tightly sealed we cannot even assume the trial transcript will be available to the public. The refusal by police to release the autopsy reports has left even the mainstream media dueling over how Miss Christian died and what was done to her corpse. The Knoxville News Sentinel claimed Lemaricus Davidson strangled her but left her corpse intact. ABC's and CBS's Knoxville affiliates reported she was dismembered, though neither was clear whether this was how she was killed or whether her corpse was cut apart after she was murdered. CNN claimed Miss Christian "asphyxiated" after she was forced into an airtight garbage can. When it suits them, the Knoxville police can be very forthcoming with information. On May 22, just-released black career criminal Dwayne Hill, 39, celebrated his third day of freedom with an attempted carjacking in East Knoxville. When police stepped in, he fought them, was tasered, and died. Within 24 hours, the department produced a report showing that Hill "had an illegal substance in his system," and had died of a condition unrelated to the tasering. When a back man dies at the hands of officers, and there is a chance "the community" might be unhappy, the police are quick with the facts. Whites do not merit the same treatment. Mischief Within Mischief Meanwhile, in this deliberate void of information, a different kind of rumor has grown up, notably at the black, anti-white web site, "Svengalimedia." This site celebrates black-on-white murders, and sponsors an annual "Sexiest & Hardest Ghetto, Black, Male, Felon Bragging Rights Competition" for the most gruesome black-on-white murder. Lemaricus Davidson is this year's front-runner. Svengalimedia's contributors have praised Miss Newsom's rape: "Privileged whites deserve to feel and know our experiences and values firsthand and not just from word of mouth or by books and movies. Their families need and deserve to have terrible memories & experiences with blacks." Murder victim Channon Christian. Other contributors have proposed novel theories about the crime. One is that Channon Christian had driven into a black neighborhood "to buy drugs." Another, which has piggybacked on the sexual mutilation rumors, claims that Miss Christian staged the carjacking and cut off her own breasts. According to this fantasy, Miss Christian wanted to die from black sexual torture, and arranged everything herself. Svengalimedia contributor Waldorf Carathers even hinted at the existence of a "death by sexual torture sex video directed by Channon Christian," noting that cell phones had been found at the Chipman Street house, and might have been used to record the killing. Many Knoxville blacks take the view--promoted by Svengalimedia--that the two whites were hijacked when they cruised into a black neighborhood to buy drugs. Some have claimed that the Svengalimedia site is a hoax; in any case, it appears to have shut down recently. However, fantasies as obscene as those it promotes are found in the "respectable" black mainstream. Last November, in the federal carjacking and weapons trial of Dedrick Griham, defense lawyer Emory Anthony, Jr. argued that the victim, a white Birmingham lawyer, had "staged" the carjacking and was a willing participant in her own rape and sodomy. The black defendant claimed that the white victim had gotten in touch with him through a completely imaginary prostitute named "Puddin" or "Pumpkin," who offered him money to fulfill the white woman's feverish fantasies. The jury didn't buy this story, and convicted Mr. Griham, who had 13 previous felony convictions, on all counts. The judge sentenced him to life plus 84 months. Likewise, it is not uncommon for blacks to be indifferent to, and even show "Svengalian" satisfaction in the face of cruelties done to whites. In 1973 and 1974, the Nation of Islam carried out a series of black-on-white killings in San Francisco known as the Zebra Murders. Self-styled "death angels" killed at least 16 "blue-eyed devils" and injured another eight or ten in what was, again, a spectacular crime wave that was little reported outside its local area. Clark Howard recounts in his classic 1979 work, Zebra: The True Account of the 179 Days of Terror in San Francisco, that in 1974, at the height of the white panic, two teams of San Francisco Examiner reporters and photographers could not find a single black resident who expressed any sympathy for the white victims. Similarly, during the 2002 Washington, DC-area serial murder spree by the Black Muslim John Muhammad and his teenaged protégé, Lee Malvo, before the pair killed a black man, a black woman psychologist on a Fox News program remarked, with great satisfaction, that whites now knew what blacks put up with all the time. The Media Go to Plan B In mid-May, the weight of Internet speculation about the crimes (in addition to a comprehensive report on the AR web site that appeared on May 14) seems to have forced the Knoxville police and the national media to change course. On May 18, the Knox County DA's office finally broke silence to announce that the rumors of sexual mutilation were "absolutely not true." There was also a smattering of national coverage when it was reported that the defendants would each be tried separately, beginning in the spring of 2008. A little-known classic about a little-known horror. One thing that did not change was the cheerful insistence that the crime had no racial motive, that it had not been downplayed by the media, and that even if the races were reversed the media would not have paid attention. Something else that did not change was the shortage of facts; many important details are still obscure (although Fox News explained that the fuzzy reporting was deliberate because what happened was "too gruesome" to report). The clear purpose has been to dismiss any outraged whites as "white supremacists" and "racists." The national media found plenty of "experts" to support the party line. The "reader representative" of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ted Diadiun, said the crime was no worse than thousands of others committed every year. He suggested that angry whites are guilty of racism, while the killers clearly are not. Kelly McBride, "ethics group leader" at the Poynter Institute for Journalism, explained that there could have been no racial motive because "you have to have specific evidence, such as some sort of racial epithet." Ted Gest, who is president of a national organization of journalists who cover crime, said that although crime that crosses racial lines tends to get more attention, "I can't say that this one would have had any more coverage if five whites had been accused of doing these things to two blacks, absent a blatant racial motive." Newsday reporter Ellis Henican suggested on Fox News that anyone who thinks there is any kind of anti-white newsroom racial bias is delusional. "Why do you want to force the racial angle?" he wanted to know. Only a few commentators saw through this foolishness. As retired conservative columnist John Leo pointed out: "[T]he newsroom culture tends to view black-on-white crimes as responses to black oppression, and therefore not worth reporting. Whereas similar white-on-black crime is oppression itself, and thus crucially important to put before readers and viewers." Eric Boyd: charged in the carjacking but not in the rapes and murders. Perhaps the lowest blow was AP reporter Duncan Mansfield's suggestion that Miss Christian's father was not taking bereavement in the proper spirit: "Christian's father, Gary Christian, wore a Confederate flag T-shirt--a symbol of the Old South where slavery was rifre [sic]--to the first hearing for one of the defendants and then pointed at the man as if firing a gun." Another event that drew attention to the crime was a "rally against genocide" held in Knoxville on May 26 by Vanguard News Network founder Alex Linder. (The "genocide" Mr. Linder was protesting was not murders of whites by blacks but "genocide" of whites by Jews, as he explained to me in an April 6 interview. He insisted on this, even though I had told him I am a Jew. Surprisingly, the hostile reporters who covered his demonstration never learned the nature of the "genocide.") Local authorities responded with 300 law enforcement officers in full riot gear: 200 from the Knoxville Police Department, plus another 100 Knox County sheriff's deputies, Tennessee Highway Patrolmen, and federal agents. A radical leftwing organization called Mountain Justice Summer organized a counter-demonstration that looked like a transvestites' ball (see photo, next page). There was plenty of contrast in how the media covered the two demonstrations. The press repeatedly asked Mr. Linder's supporters where they were from so they could say that the counter-demonstrators had "laughed off white pride groups as ignorant out-of-towners." Reporters referred vaguely to the flamboyantly eccentric leftists as "environmentalists," in contrast to the "white supremacists" at the "hate rally." Vanessa Coleman: indicted for rape and murder. Many of the counter-demonstrators were from so far out of town they were not sure what they were protesting. Spokesman Amanda Cagle reflected the prevailing sentiment when she said, "We want to shame the Klan, so they won't ever want to come back here." Nor did the counter-demonstrators seem to understand the origins of the controversy. While the "rally against genocide" constantly evoked Miss Christian and Mr. Newsom, the "anti-racists" did not so much as feign sympathy for the victims or their families. Chris Irwin, a lawyer who spoke for the group, sounded almost as if the killers were white and their victims black: "It's not the 1950s anymore! They [the protesters] are not just a knife at the throat of the African American and immigrant communities, they're a threat to us all." Police arrested Mr. Linder even before the rally began. They had designated areas for demonstrators and counter-demonstrators, with a neutral zone in between that was to be left empty. Mr. Linder walked into the neutral zone, and quickly found himself facing a host of imaginative charges: disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, vandalism, and assault on a police officer. Journalists used the demonstrations as a pretext to go after the parents again, pressuring them to denounce the Linder rally or be tarred as racists. The media browbeat Miss Christian's father into saying the murders were "not racist" but Mr. Newsom refused to give them that satisfaction. A different white group called "Against Black Crimes" has tentatively scheduled a rally for June 16, despite opposition from the Knox County Commission. Ken Gregg, who has been associated with a group called the White Patriot Party, filed the application for a permit to demonstrate. The Knoxville murders are finally getting some attention. What do these crimes--horrible enough without the rumored sexual mutilations--tell us about race and crime in America? First, despite what the tame "experts" have said, if the races were reversed, there would be a media extravaganza on the scale of Rodney King or James Byrd. Second, the police would have laid all their cards on the table, and the press would have reported every lurid detail. Police arrest Mr. Linder. In the background, please note the decorous attire of the counter-demonstrators, who called themselves the 'Coup Kluts Clowns.' But because this was a particularly repulsive black-on-white crime, the authorities and national press conspired to keep things quiet. In the absence of details, some racially conscious whites were prepared to believe revolting rumors, but only because they knew details of the underreported horrors of past black-on-white crimes: The Wichita Massacre was replete with sexual torture (see AR, "The Wichita Massacre," August 2002); blacks cut off a living man's penis during the Zebra murders; and the 1980s' Yahweh ben Yahweh cult killers in Miami were ordered to bring back a head, finger, or ear to prove they had dispatched a white person. At the same time, the media stir up anti-white hatred and promote the fantasy that white women lust for black fulfillment. This only feeds the degeneracy that ends up in places like Svengalimedia--and federal courtrooms. This is also a case in which the Internet, which reflects the interests of real Americans far better than does the mainstream press, finally forced the media to take up a story they would have preferred to ignore. Some of the blogging was irresponsible, but the cumulative effect was to build up such a demand for information that official silence could no longer be seen as anything but deliberate withholding of information. Now it will be impossible to do what the authorities would no doubt have preferred, and report the forthcoming trials as if they were minor, local news. There are still many journalists and government officials who promote the pious and pathetic myth that only whites can commit "racist" crimes, and who will continue to suppress inconvenient facts. As more and more whites wake up to racial reality, however, it will become much more difficult to trample on the public's right to know. Leonard Pitts Blasted For Anti-White Bias By Alex 6-9-7   I like Leonard Pitts columns and usually agree with him. But today he's monumentally wrong. He is railing against whites "putting on the victim hat" because of a horrific murder that happened in Knoxville and the scant attention it got from the media.   It seems that in January, a young white couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, were victims of a brutal crime. They were carjacked, kidnapped and raped. Cleaning fluid was sprayed into Christian's mouth. She was stuffed in a trash can and apparently suffocated. Newsom was shot and set afire. His body was dumped. Five African Americans, one a woman, have been arrested.   The story made headlines around Knoxville. It was unnoticed nationally.   That has changed. A constellation of white supremacists and conservative bloggers has pushed the story into the national limelight as illustration of their argument that news media, constrained by political correctness, refuse to report black on white crime while pulling out all the stops when crime is white on black as in the Duke lacrosse debacle. Me, I would see their Duke case and raise them a Central Park jogger, but what do I know?   I don't know if it's Pitts snarky tone ("It seems"? "I'm obligated -- because I'm black --") or his kill-the-messenger approach that puts me off the most. First off, I don't see how the Duke case and the Central Park jogger case cancel each other -both were gross police and prosecutorial errors- unless seen as tit-for-tat in racial wars. Two wrongs don't make a right, as Pitts well knows.   Second, by jointly disregarding "white supremacists" and "conservative bloggers" he's equating the two, and that's also wrong. A conservative may have a right bone to pick with the media coverage without being racially suspect. For example, here's what John Leo or Charlie Daniels had to say about the case. Now, I don't agree with 99.9% of anything Charlie Daniels has said or sang about, but I can't disagree with his "soapbox" in this case.   I do think that if this had been five white animals raping, torturing and murdering two black kids, it would had been big news. I think the press would have labeled it a hate crime maybe even before the prosecutors did. I'm not saying that would have been bad, coverage (not media circuses) of hate crimes is good to the point that we are all aware they exist and as part of the national discussion on race. This crime was gruesome, brutal and sick, the kind that national news outlets salivate for (missing girls in Aruba for example), and the absence of interest is baffling indeed. Especially Aggravated Robbery is a Class A felony that carries a possibility of 15 to 60 years in prison. Aggravated Rape is a Class A felony that carries a possibility of 15 to 60 years of prison. At a news conference Thursday, Nichols commended the cooperative efforts between several departments and credits that cooperation for the fast pace this case is moving through the court system. Nichols says he hopes to move the case to trial on the first day it's set. The four are expected to make their first court appearance within ten to fifteen days. This is certainly a case garnering a lot of public interest, Nichols recognizes that and says he expects all kinds of requests filed in this case, including a change of venue in order to receive a fair trial. But he says he does hope 12 Knox County jurors will be able to determine the guilt or innocence of these suspects. Where is the national media? Where are the protestors? What kind of a people are we? The horrors they have visited upon our children. Have we become so desensitized to horror? To what depths have we sunk? You see, Channon and Christopher were not some strangers to us. They belong to all of us. They were not just another mindless gut wrenching atrocity.  Do you have the courage, for one moment to see who they really were? They were ours. Channon Christian was my sweet little girl, who always knew I would be there to protect her. When she drew pictures as a child I was always as tall as the trees. Channon Christian was my sister. My sister, who nagged and fussed, but was always there for me and gave me pointers on girls. Channon Christian was my beautiful wife, whom I love more than words can ever express. This is who she was, to each and every one of us. But Channon Christian walks with us no longer.  She will never be a wife. She will never be a mother,. She will never know the joy of her child’s first steps. Christopher Newsom. He is my brother, my best friend. He is my little boy curled up in my arms on a stormy night. He too now is gone. Christopher will never know the joy of marriage. Christopher will never be a father. Christopher spent his last moments of his precious life in mindless agony. Can we even for one minute imagine how our beloved Channon and Chris died? We have all heard how they died. Can we, for one moment, imagine it happening to our loved ones? Because you see, Channon and Chris ARE our loved ones. Where is the outrage? Where is the fury? What are we going to do about this atrocity? This heinous, unthinkable horror committed against our sister, our brother, our daughter, our son, our best friend. What kind of a people are we that ANYONE, ANYWHERE believes they can do this to us, to our children, to our sisters, to our brothers, to our friends and not feel the wrath of hell? What kind of people are we who have allowed this genocide? These are all questions I ask myself, we must all ask ourselves. Do we know what true horror is? Are we ready to stand up so that such horror may never again be visited on one of our beloved, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, neighbors and friends? Are we? Do you feel what I say is incendiary? This is nowhere near incendiary enough. Think of what they did to our daughter, our son, our wife, our husband, our best friend. Race, Crime, and the Media by R. Cort Kirkwood If five whites carjacked a black couple, tortured them for hours, then dumped the bodies, the national news media would descend upon the benighted city in which the dastardly crime occurred and, having reported the unspeakable deeds, subject the rest of us to rants on racism and harangues on hate. It happened with James Byrd, the black man dragged to death behind a car in Jasper, Texas, and it happens even when the crimes are fictive, as with huckstress Tawana Brawley and, more recently, the lacrosse team at Duke University. In such cases, we are told that whether or not the crimes actually occurred does not matter: We learn a lesson simply in contemplating them. The truth is, we are never permitted to contemplate the truth about race and crime. Most interracial crime involves blacks harming whites, and federal statistics show that blacks commit more hate crimes than whites. The news media’s stiff-necked refusal to report these facts is escalating and indisputable, as several recent cases show, and invites us to question why so many news professionals—so dedicated to disclosing so many unwelcome facts about so many subjects—are so unwilling to examine this one. “Liberal media bias” isn’t the only answer. Something else is at work. First, a few examples. The murders of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian in Knoxville, Tennessee, merited almost no attention from the national news media and none from the New York Times. According to police, on January 7, a band of black criminals carjacked the pair, then treated them to a nightmare of sexual torture. The gang raped Newsom, shot him, burned him with gasoline, wrapped him in bedding, then set him ablaze. Afterward, they dumped his body on nearby railroad tracks. They forced Christian to watch this and repeatedly (and savagely) raped her, then sprayed liquid cleaner in her mouth to erase their residual DNA. After killing her, the thugs placed her in trash bags and stuffed her in a garbage can. Five suspects await trial. On Halloween, three white girls approached a haunted maze in the backyard of a home in Long Beach, California. A group of a dozen black boys, according to newspaper accounts, began taunting them. The boys grabbed their crotches, asking, “Are you down with it?” The girls went through the maze, but when they returned to the front yard, the boys were waiting to taunt them again. Then they heard another male voice declare, “I hate white people.” “White bitches,” others shouted. The girls started to leave, but a mob of about 30 blacks, including young girls, gathered and pelted them with pumpkins and lemons. “We hate white people,” they hollered, “f–king white people.” When the defenseless girls tried to flee, the mob attacked in full force, beating and stomping the first victim to the ground. When she tried to fight back, a black man smashed her head with a skateboard, then hit her again when she was on the ground, unconscious. The mob kicked her anyway. When one friend tried to rescue her, the mob swarmed, punched her until she dropped, then stomped, and kicked her on the ground. She received 12 facial fractures and severe damage to one of her eyes. The third girl also tried to help, but the mob beat her to a pulp—again, kicking and stomping her when they got her on the ground. The judge tossed out DNA evidence from a victim’s blood on one attacker’s clothes because, one news report said, it would complicate the case. Ultimately, he sentenced those found guilty to house arrest and probation. Again, the New York Times and other national news media mostly ignored it. No wondering how it could happen. No soul-searching. No lectures on racism from the university professoriate, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton. In April 2005, a mob of 30 blacks attacked four white girls at Marine Park in Brooklyn, New York, shouting “black power,” according to the small weekly that covered it, and invoking Martin Luther King, Jr. Two of the victims landed in the hospital, one with a broken nose. Immediately, police denied this was a hate crime. The national news media ignored it. And again, the Rainbow Coalition took a powder. On December 14, 2000, two black brothers, Jonathan and Reginald Carr, invaded the Wichita home of Jason Befort and his two friends, Bradley Heyka and Aaron Sandler, who were entertaining Befort’s girlfriend, Heather Muller, and Sandler’s former girlfriend (“H.G.”). (Sandler was then studying for the priesthood.) As with the carjacking in Knoxville, the black men, ending a week-long feral rampage, subjected their five white victims to an orgy of sexual torture nearly beyond description. After beating the men senseless, they forced the women to have sex, attempted to force the men to have sex with the women, then raped and sodomized the women. They robbed them and drove the naked (the women were clad only in sweaters) victims to a field and executed four of them. H.G., having been shot in the head and run over repeatedly with a truck, managed to survive. Despite H.G.’s testimony, which indicated that the brothers made numerous racial slurs while torturing and attempting to kill her, prosecutors hotly denied that this was a hate crime. Again, the national news media ignored the story. Stories about all these crimes appeared in local newspapers and on local television news. (Even local media often omit the race of the suspect.) Somehow, these stories never rocketed to the editorial stratosphere of CBS, CNN, the Washington Post, or the New York Times. Some national-news websites published a smattering of AP stories about these crimes. Had they involved whites attacking blacks, all of these news organizations would have dispatched staff writers, photographers, producers, and cameramen to get the story. That is exactly what happened when three white lacrosse players at Duke University were accused of raping a black stripper at an off-campus party; the national news media descended in full force. The charges smeared the team, and the Duke lacrosse season was canceled. Hundreds of stories appeared about this fictive crime—a case in which the prosecutor was forced to quit and may be disbarred for egregious ethical violations. The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the major television networks unlimbered a blunderbuss and sprayed us with stories. It was time to search our souls for racism. For intolerance. For bigotry. For a crime that never happened. Of course, Durham was recently the site of a rape at an off-campus party at which men from Duke were present. The national news media ignored it, and the Raleigh News and Observer eliminated race in its description of both the party and the suspect. A black fraternity hosted the party. The suspect is black; the victim is white. The leftists who run the national news media know what they are doing, and they won’t confront the truth about race and crime; that would require reforming their thoughts about the world and undermine their declared agenda. The news media are obsessed with “diversity,” as Bill McGowen demonstrated in Coloring the News, his book on how the media spins stories because of race. Some topics, including affirmative action, are taboo in newsrooms. For example, when the New York Times exposed rank incompetence and rampant criminality among rookies in the NYPD, it failed to disclose how or why such incompetence and criminality crept into the ranks: Hiring standards had been lowered to promote minorities in the name of “diversity.” In journalism, the last few years have been one long chin-wag about diversity. The potentates of journalism discuss it with religious fervor. Editors receive dogmatic flyers and evangelical videotapes importuning them to hire minority applicants and interns and to attend minority job fairs. They receive surveys designed to measure the racial and sex complexion of newsrooms. The American Society of Newspaper Editors proclaims, “We count the number of journalists, their gender [sic] and race” in order to “help newsrooms think about diversity.” The society sponsors a silly project called “Time Out for Accuracy and Diversity.” Of course, accuracy never trumps diversity. The publisher of the New York Times has said that diversity is the most important issue facing his newspaper; this is how Jayson Blair, a serial liar with a long rap sheet of plagiarism and mendacity, slipped through the cracks. This leftist obsession with diversity and race in the newsroom informs the media’s coverage of crime, particularly interracial crime. In a letter posted on the forum at Romenesko, on the website of the Poynter Institute, David Mills, a former writer for the Washington Times, hammered the Los Angeles Times for ignoring the mob melee at Long Beach. “You don’t have to be a card-carrying Klansman,” Mills wrote, to point out that the LA Times surely would be treating this story differently if three black women had been attacked by 30 white teenagers hurling words like “F— black people.” Columnists and editorial writers would be rending their garments, agonizing over the meaning of such a brutal crime. . . . The Halloween mob assault appears to be the worst instance of black-on-white violence in Southern California since Reginald Denny took a cinder block to the head. Why is the LA Times covering it so grudgingly? The only reference to the beatings on the op-ed page came last Sunday, when Michael McGough, a senior editorial writer, wrote of this case: “I wouldn’t dare to prejudge [it] even if the facts weren’t so murky.” He then fretted that an “unintended consequence” of hate-crime laws is that “such laws could end up punishing blacks who commit violence against whites—which is a far cry from the historical experience that inspired hate-crime statutes.” Say what? I didn’t realize that hate-crime laws were supposed to punish only white people. Presented with a shocking instance of black-on-white violence, the Times thinks the only larger issue worth discussing is whether hate-crime legislation is wrongheaded? McGough’s point was that blacks are incapable of racism and hate crimes; they are perpetual victims. No wonder the national news media refuses to report horrific black-on-white crimes. Just as “diversity” trumps competence in the newsroom, white-on-black crime always trumps its converse. The media’s morality play about unbridled white racism is a perilous fairy tale that justifies the media’s racial agenda not just for newsrooms but for society at large. Moreover, whites are increasingly angry about the media’s treatment of blacks and crime, which undermines what little credibility the media have and energizes unfair and unjust remarks and rage about blacks in general. This, in turn, breeds the very racial animosity the dim bulbs in the news media claim they want to erase. Yet admitting the truth would undermine the media’s hectoring, obnoxious propaganda, which insists that whites are oppressors and blacks are victims, and would deprive the race hustlers and cultural leftists of the crowning symbol that permits them to rig the courts and spin the news: the racist white bogeyman. As in victim of racial oppression. By any measure -- health, education, economics, employment -- white Americans enjoy a superior standard of living. If that's racial oppression, sign me up. But still, one occasionally hears mewling noises from that subset of my white countrymen who feel put-upon by big, bad racial minorities. This is one of those times. And Knoxville, Tenn., has become the capital city of that lunatic fringe. It seems that in January, a young white couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, were victims of a brutal crime. They were carjacked, kidnapped and raped. Cleaning fluid was sprayed into Christian's mouth. She was stuffed in a trash can and apparently suffocated. Newsom was shot and set afire. His body was dumped. Five blacks, one a woman, have been arrested. [Now compare this to the fake Duke Lacrosse Rape and the media coverage it enjoyed]. The story made headlines around Knoxville. It was unnoticed nationally. That has changed. A constellation of white supremacists and conservative bloggers [As far as Pitt's is concerned anyone that is a conservative is probably a white supremacist] has pushed the story into the national limelight as illustration of their argument that news media, constrained by political correctness, refuse to report black-on-white crime while pulling out all the stops when crime is white on black, as in the Duke University lacrosse debacle. I would see their Duke case and raise them a Central Park jogger, but what do I know? Anyway, bloggers such as Michael Oliver have chastised the "liberal, biased, mainstream media" for missing the Knoxville story. He asked, "Had the roles been reversed, would the media ignore such a horrific crime?" [Nope] Truth is, media ignore horrific crimes all the time. Space is limited and growing more so. Which means the story that catches fire usually has some element beyond gruesomeness to sell it. In the Duke case, it was class, privilege, sex and race that did it. Not that I expect Oliver or other "oppressed" white people to pay attention to something so trivial as fact. [Yes, Pitt's thinks tthat if you're concerned about the enormous amount of black on white crime you are probably stupid, i.e. not interested in facts] They're too busy demanding that this case be tried as a hate crime -- even though police say there's no evidence the couple were targeted for any other reason than that they were there. And on May 26, white supremacists held -- I kid you not -- a "rally against genocide" in Knoxville. Part of me thinks I should consider the source and let this slide. But the argument being advanced here is so utterly, abysmally, stupidly, self-servingly wrong that I cannot help but respond. Black crime against whites is underreported? On what planet? Study after study and expert after expert tell a completely different story. For instance, there's "Off Balance: Youth, Race and Crime in the News," a 2001 report that concluded: Blacks and Latinos are underrepresented in news media as victims of crime and significantly overrepresented as perpetrators, based on crime statistics; newspaper articles about white homicide victims are longer and more frequent than those about black ones; and interracial violent crime is more likely to be reported, even though it is just about the rarest kind of violent crime. And here I'm obligated, because I'm black, to say that if the defendants in this case did what they are accused of doing, I'd be happy to see them rot under the jailhouse. Sadly, that needs saying, because there are people who will not take it as a given. But with that obligation fulfilled, let me add that I am likewise unkindly disposed toward the crackpots, incendiaries and flat-out racists who have chosen this tragedy upon which to take an obscene and ludicrous stand. It was tougher than he had anticipated. In his time there, he found a few good students but too many unprepared to do the work and unwilling to make the effort. He was frustrated at being unable to connect and make a difference. [Times photo: Atoyia Deans]   The August sun beat down and the temperature already was approaching 80 degrees on Monday morning as I neared Stillman College. This would be my first day as a professor at this small historically black school in Tuscaloosa, an old Southern city of fewer than 80, 000 residents where the University of Alabama and the Crimson Tide football team overshadow everything else. As I drove through Stillman's black-iron main gate and approached Martin Luther King Jr. Hall, a three-story men's dormitory, I was on a mission to fulfill a promise to myself. The college was founded in 1876, sits on a tidy 106 acres and has an enrollment of fewer than 1, 000 students. Many locals see the campus as an oasis, the only real symbol of hope in the most racially segregated, most economically depressed part of Tuscaloosa. The original front section of the campus, with its sprawling green lawn and red brick buildings, has some of the grand magnolias that greeted students at the turn of the 20th century. Driving my 13-year-old, unairconditioned Chevy Blazer past the guard house, I became apprehensive when I noticed about a dozen male students wearing baggy pants, oversized white T-shirts, expensive sneakers and assorted bling standing around shooting the breeze. At least two had "jailhouse tats" on their arms, crude tattoos suggesting that these young men had spent time behind bars. They carried no books or anything else to indicate they were on a college campus. I got a good look at their faces. I wanted to remember these young men if any of them showed up in my classes. Behind them, several others sat on a low brick wall near the dorm entrance. They, too, were clad like extras in a gangsta rap video. It was a scene straight out of "the hood" - young black men seemingly without direction or purpose, hanging out on the corner. In this case, they were hanging out on what is popularly known as "The Yard" on a college campus where they were supposed to be preparing for a more productive life. I had expected a more collegiate scene on Aug. 9, 2004. A year before coming to Stillman, I had written a commentary for the St. Petersburg Times arguing that Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs, remain viable. I further argued that given the increasing reliance on standardized tests to determine college admission and given the nation's conservative turn, HBCUs are needed more than ever to provide an opportunity for many young blacks who otherwise never would be able to attend college because of factors such as low standardized test scores and criminal records. There are 106 HBCUs in 24 states, and they are mostly in the South. They are public and relatively well-funded, such as Florida A&M University in Tallahassee; private and well-financed with solid academic reputations, such as Howard University in Washington, Spelman College and Morehouse College in Atlanta and Hampton University in Virginia. They are also tiny, poor and struggling, such as Stillman. They offer four-year and two-year degrees, liberal arts and technology paths. Some have graduate schools and schools of law and medicine. Before the 1964 Civil Rights Act, these schools were the ticket to the good life for blacks. But integration gradually siphoned off many of their best kids, and HBCUs now enroll just 12 percent of all black college students. Yet I still believed in these schools. So in 2004 I resigned from my job as a St. Petersburg Times columnist and editorial writer that paid more than $70, 000 a year to teach at Stillman for $33, 000 a year. I wanted to fulfill a long-ago promise I made with the professors who taught and nurtured me during the 1960s at two historically black colleges, Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, and Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. When I began my first day at Stillman, I was channeling my experiences of long ago. I would be a professor who would inspire and guide the lives of young black women and men who wanted to become successful journalists. As it turned out, I would last just two years before returning to the Times. I left the campus disheartened and disillusioned, and I regretted leaving behind a handful of dedicated students with real potential. Another graduating class has just left Stillman through the same gates I first entered in 2004, but I no longer feel welcome on campus. I had chosen Stillman for several reasons. I had friends in Tuscaloosa, and I had a nostalgic connection dating back to 1964, when I helped register voters who had sought the safety of the campus. I also liked Stillman president Ernest McNealey. An Alabama native, McNealey wanted Stillman to have a strong journalism program. He knew that newsrooms around the nation look for competent black reporters and editors, and he wanted me to re-establish the journalism major that had been discontinued in 1997. With an effective program, we could find good jobs for many of our graduates. He was the kind of man I wanted to work for. With a $100, 000 gift from a Tampa donor, my colleagues and I re-established the major during my first semester, and we set up a modest scholarship. After that, my main responsibilities were managing the program, teaching and recruiting students and co-advising the student newspaper. 'Take your seats and be quiet!' At 8 on that first morning, I met my freshman English class. I had volunteered to teach it because I wanted to assess the writing skills of the students in general. Because the chairman of my department had promised me small classes, I had expected no more than 15 students. Instead, I faced 33. All were black; more than half were women. Four of the men had been in front of King Hall earlier. The room was noisy, and two who had been in front of King Hall were horsing around. I put my books on the table and raised an arm for silence. When only a few students paid attention I raised my arm again, and this time I yelled. "All right, knock it off! Take your seats and be quiet!" I could not believe that I had to yell for college students to behave in a classroom. This is not going to be a good experience, I thought, unfolding the roster and preparing to call the roll. When I could not pronounce the second name on the list, I knew for sure I was in big trouble. As I fumbled with the strange combinations of alphabets and apostrophes, the class roared. "He can't even read, " a student said. More laughter. The air conditioner was down, and sweat dripped from my face as I struggled with the last name on the roll. After getting the room quiet, I instructed the students to "write an in-class essay of no more than 500 words describing at least three positive or negative things about your high school." I told them I would read the essays and return them the next time we met. "This is a diagnostic essay, " I said. "I won't grade it. I simply want to see how well you write. If you plan to major in journalism, I want to see you after class. I will hand out the syllabus next time." After class, just two female students said they wanted to major in journalism. During office hours and lunch, I read the essays. I wondered what I had gotten myself into when only one paper demonstrated college-level writing. During my 18 years of previous college teaching, I had never seen such poor writing - sentence fragments, run-on sentences, misspellings, wrong words and illogical word order. From one paper: "In my high school, prejudism were bad and people feel like nothing." From another essay: "Central High kids put there nose in other people concern." I was surprised and disappointed that the two prospective journalism majors had as many mistakes in their copy as their classmates. I shared the results with a colleague who had taught journalism and English at Stillman for three years. Her response was discouraging. The abysmal writing was par for the course, and I had better brace myself if I intended to keep my sanity. 'I ain't taking this class' That afternoon, I met my opinion writing and news writing/reporting classes. I had five students in one and seven in the other. Again, I called the roll and took writing samples. That night at home, I eagerly read the papers. These budding journalism majors were the reason I came to Stillman. But after an hour of reading, I did not see how any of them would become reporters and editors without superhuman efforts on their part and mine. None had any sense of how a news article comes together. None knew how to write a compelling lead or how to use the active voice. Only one, a young woman in the opinion writing class, had written for a high school newspaper. During the next class meetings, I returned the papers. I did not mark the work, but I explained the writing was disappointingly bad and that they would have to work overtime to learn to write at an acceptable level. All except the one student who had a decent essay were outraged. "I thought this was going to be a real English class, " a student said. I asked her which high school she had attended and what she meant. The Selma High School graduate said her English teacher had let students spend most of their time discussing current events and writing short paragraphs. They wrote one essay all term. Most of the other students nodded approvingly. I did not tell the class that Selma High was considered to be academically inferior. I did tell them we would follow the syllabus, which required eight essays and four revisions. I also told them they would have to complete the grammar quizzes in the textbook. Everyone, except the competent writer, groaned. "I ain't taking this class, " one of the students who had been in front of King Hall said. He stood, nodded to his three friends and walked out of the room. One of them followed. The other two stared at me and scowled for the remainder of the period. The journalism students in the other two classes accepted my criticism without grumbling. In fact, they were pleased with the prospect of learning how to write "like real reporters, " said Kristin Heard, a freshman from Montgomery. 'The endangered chair' Even as I attended my first faculty meeting in those first few days, I sensed I might not belong at Stillman. During a break, I went to the refreshment table for orange juice. I spoke to two black professors already there. "You're Bill Maxwell, right?" one asked. "Right, " I said. "The new endowed chair, " he said slyly. "The endangered chair, " the other said. They had a big laugh at my expense. "It's scholar-in-residence, " I said, trying to save face. By the beginning of my second year, I would find myself alienated from most of the senior administrators and most of the longtime staff members who were responsible for the day-to-day operations of the institution. My alienation, a colleague told me, was the result of a disease found at most HBCUs: professional jealousy. The college president hired me as the "scholar in residence" on a 10-month contract for a modest salary. Some professors resented the arrangement because they had been there for several years and were earning the same or less. In addition to re-establishing the journalism major, my duties included teaching at least three courses and advising the student newspaper. Unofficially, I was expected to be the guest speaker at select campus functions and assist with public relations. At least two colleagues publicly complained that the president had created a job for me and was spending money unnecessarily. Several colleagues called me "McNealey's boy." Although I considered the whole affair to be childish and foolish, I was offended and embarrassed. Refusing to buy the book After a week, I faced another problem that my seasoned colleagues knew well but failed to warn me about: Most Stillman students refuse to buy their required textbooks. I discovered the problem on a Friday when I met my English class to discuss the assigned essay in the text. They were to write an essay in response to the reading. Only one student, the young man who wrote well, had read the essay. He had the text in front of him. The others had not purchased the text. I warned them that if they returned to class without their books, they would receive an F. But only five of 31 students brought their texts to the next class. Most students had book vouchers as part of their financial aid, so I told those without books to walk with me to the bookstore, a distance of about three football fields. Some did not follow me, and I tried to remember who they were. At the store I watched students wander around, obviously trying to avoid buying the book. Only about eight wound up buying one. I became angry that I had to deal with such a self-destructive, juvenile problem. I saw the refusal to buy the text as a collective act of defiance. I knew that if I lost this battle, I would not have any control in this class and no respect. The next Monday, I went to class dreading a showdown. While calling the roll, I asked the students to show me their texts. Eighteen still did not have them. One said he had bought the book but left it in his dorm room "by mistake." I told him to go get it. He gathered his belongings and left. He never came to class again. As promised, I recorded an F for all students who did not bring their texts. The last two young men from in front of King Hall walked out. I saw myself as having failed them as a professor, but I was relieved they were gone. I also decided to take away students' excuses for not having access to the texts. I personally bought two copies of each book and put them on reserve in the library. From time to time, I would check to see who had used them. During the entire semester, the books were used only six times. Below average by most measures As I settled into my routine at Stillman that first fall, I researched the backgrounds of the students in the English class. None had an SAT score above 1000. The average combined SAT score for the nation was 1026; the best possible score was 1600. None of them had taken advanced placement courses in school. Of the 33 students, 21 came from single-parent, low-income families who lived mostly in Alabama. Some came from the state's Black Belt, one of the poorest areas in the nation with some of the worst public schools. The Black Belt's most famous town is Selma, home of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the site of "Bloody Sunday, " where state troopers and sheriff's deputies beat hundreds of civil rights marchers on March 7, 1965. Of the nearly 1, 000 students on campus, all but 100 or so received financial aid and loans. Nearly everyone qualified for federal Pell grants. I had come to campus having read studies showing that students in this demographic group tend to perform below average by most academic measures. Instead of being disheartened, I remembered I was much like my students as a 17-year-old freshman at Wiley College not knowing what to expect. Unlike the majority of my students at Stillman, though, I was an avid reader. Even at age 13, I knew that I wanted be a writer. I was determined to learn my first day at Wiley, which I attended from 1963 to 1965. I played football my first semester. During the second semester, I gave up my football scholarship and got a federal student loan. I wanted to devote all of my time to my studies and to reading on my own. And I was not alone. Many of my schoolmates were similarly inspired after a few months on our tiny East Texas campus. I also had caring professors who introduced the life of the mind to this kid reared as a migrant farm worker in labor camps up and down the eastern United States. My professors were intellectuals, and I wanted to be just like them. Our professors - whether we liked them or hated them - were gods, and we were to learn all we could from them. For many of us, Wiley was the only opportunity to earn a four-year degree. Jim Crow barred us from most colleges and universities in the South, and our low ACT and SAT scores disqualified us from attending most other campuses nationwide. Wiley was our lifeline to professional success. And we knew it. Highly dedicated teachers While students at Stillman often had a lower assessment of their professors, there were some highly dedicated teachers who were not there for money or fame. Most earned doctorates from some of the nation's best universities. Of the college's 88 full-time professors during my time there, about 70 percent were white. Stillman was typical of the overwhelming majority of other HBCUs, where white professors outnumber black professors, a trend pejoratively referred to as the "whitening" of the HBCU faculty. A major reason for this phenomenon is that mainline universities seeking ethnic diversity on their faculties heavily recruit new black Ph.D.s and specialists. Another reason is that many black Ph.D.s see teaching at the HBCU as being "drudge work" - a step down, not a step up. As far as I could tell, black and white professors were collegial to one another, and I never heard of any serious racial conflicts. I did hear several black students complain about having so many white professors in a historically black environment. One student, Jillian Freeman, a freshman cheerleader, said: "I came here because I wanted black professors, but most of my professors are white. I don't like this." Before coming to Stillman, I had heard and read about the so-called inferiority of the professors at HBCUs. Because Stillman was essentially a teaching institution, the "publish or perish" rule did not apply. But I was surprised that many of my colleagues still had impressive scholarly publications. I have taught at several other colleges, and I must say that Stillman's faculty, despite the low salaries, is highly competent. I regularly sat in on lectures that were outstanding. Most are dedicated to the institution and to the students. On any given night, many professors return to campus to attend student events. Professors also routinely spent their own money for field trips and classroom supplies. The college had precious few young professors because they could not support their families on the low salaries. Only older people who had spouses earning decent salaries or who had other sources of income could teach at Stillman without struggling financially. I supplemented my much-envied salary with two small pensions and money from freelance writing. An ally at my side Lucinda Coulter was one of the bright lights at Stillman and an ally in the mission to groom young journalists. The professor, who is white, had a doctorate in American literature and had written for several magazines. She was a journalism instructor at the University of Alabama until she was hired at Stillman for a tenure-track position in 2000. It wasn't an easy transition. "During my first semester, I was overwhelmed with the workload, " she told me during one of our gripe sessions. "I taught five classes and revitalized the student newspaper. The president had shut it down. It had become unprofessional. It looked like a yearbook instead of a newspaper. "I was discouraged by the end of the year because of the workload. I returned the next year only because the faculty members in the English department were so supportive. We became close friends. We felt a common bond because we had a handful of genuinely wonderful kids." We quickly developed a similar bond as we each taught about a dozen journalism students my first semester. Together we urged the students to read the Tuscaloosa News, which cost 50 cents, so we could discuss the news and how the newspaper approached it. But the newspaper had long ago removed its lone paper rack from Stillman's campus because of theft and vandalism. The nearest racks were several blocks away at two gas stations. None of our students would walk that far to buy the newspaper, and only a few would go online to read it. "If you want to be a piano player, " I often said in class, "you have to practice playing the piano. If you want to be a reporter, you have to read newspapers." Hardly any students brought the newspaper to class. So Lucinda and I used our own money to buy each student a copy of the Tuscaloosa News every morning. The students repaid us for about three weeks, but when they stopped we kept buying it anyway. We knew some of them were living from hand to mouth. We also bought enough copies of the New York Times, the Birmingham News and USA Today for the students to share each day. Newspapers weren't all we bought. Students at other college newspapers have plenty of camera equipment. We bought dozens of disposable cameras for students to take photographs to go along with their stories for the student newspaper, the Tiger's Paw. We changed the name to The Advance, a more mature-sounding name, during my second semester. While many college newspapers are printed daily or weekly, we struggled to publish one edition each semester. Of the 12 students on the newspaper staff when I arrived, eight were English majors and only three had journalism experience in high school. Few efforts in academia are tougher than trying to teach English majors how to write like journalists. English majors tend to believe that complicated prose and obfuscation are smart. Clear prose - the bread and butter of journalism - is considered unsophisticated and incapable of conveying deep thought and important ideas. I had a hard time getting students to use short words instead of long ones: "ended" instead of "terminated;" "use" instead of "utilization;" "aim" instead of "objective." Constance Bayne, a freshman from Tennessee, was an immediate exception. After I graded three of her stories, she had an epiphany during an individual grading session. "I see what you mean, " she said, studying my revision of one of her attempts at pomposity. "Yours is better. It's real easy to read." "That's what we always want, " I said. "Simplicity is elegant." She smiled and read the rest of my revisions. The messages were lost I tried my best to cultivate a love of language and reading. Two sayings were on my office door. One was a Chinese proverb: "It is only through daily reading that you refresh your mind sufficiently to speak wisely." The other came from me: "Being Smart is Acting Black." But the messages were lost on students who had read so little growing up and had never acquired basic academic skills. I was not surprised to learn that only two of my students had read more than three of the books most high school students have read, books such as Moby Dick, The Sun Also Rises, The Color Purple and Invisible Man. Those of us who were teaching the required general education courses - all of us from the nation's respected universities, such as the University of Chicago, Indiana University, the University of Florida and Princeton - had to face a harsh reality. We primarily were practicing remediation. Every day in my classes, I reviewed basic grammar and showed students how to use the dictionary effectively, lessons normally taught in elementary and middle school. Homework was another major problem. Writing courses, especially journalism courses, are labor intensive for students and the professors. Reporting - going into the field, interviewing sources, finding official records and verifying information for accuracy - is essential. After most of my students continued to hand in articles that had only one interview, I began requiring at least four interviews, with the sources' telephone numbers, for each story. Most of the students balked and continued to hand in work with an insufficient number of interviews. Meeting deadlines, a must in journalism, was yet another problem. Few of my students regularly met the Monday deadline. I would deduct a letter grade for each day the copy was late. Some students received F's on all of their work. To avoid flunking them, I let them write in class. But that required them to show up, and I seldom had all students present. Attending class seemed to be an inconvenience. The college had an official attendance policy, but few professors followed it strictly because most of our students would have flunked out before mid-term. On most days, I did not call the roll. I simply tried to remember who was present. I recall the afternoon I sat alone in my room waiting for the seven students in the reporting class to show up. At 20 minutes past the hour, a white colleague peeked in and saw me in the otherwise empty room. "You must've had a serious assignment due?" he said. We had a big laugh. But it was a painful laugh. "It's the Stillman way, " he said. "A lot of these kids won't attend class, and, when they do, they walk in late. They're on CPT (Colored People's Time)." Although I laughed with my colleague, I was ashamed that a white person so easily joked about CPT. "They don't have intellectual curiosity, " I said. "We weren't like that at Wiley or Bethune-Cookman." "I know what you mean." This time, we did not laugh. I gathered my books and newspapers, turned out the lights and left. I hardly ever saw anyone take notes during lectures in the English class. Instead, I had to regularly chastise students for text messaging their friends and relatives and for going online to read messages and send messages. The college issued free laptops to all students who maintained a passing grade-point average. When I confronted students about text messaging, I was met with hostility. I even had a few students leave class to make calls or send text messages. Two male students threatened to physically attack Lucinda and another female professor because they demanded that the students put away their laptops in class. Each time, I would leave the English class exhausted, angry and sad. I would go home on many evenings during my first month wanting to cry, and things didn't get much better as the year progressed. I had come to Stillman on the mission of my life: I wanted to be of use, to help "uplift the race" as my professors had taught me. But as my first school year ended in the spring, instead of feeling useful and as if I were helping to uplift the race, I was feeling helpless and irrelevant.         Monday, June 11, 2007 How Much More Do We Have To Take? Am I the only one that senses a simmering rage that is always just beneath the surface, ready to boil over into violence if there were to be sufficient provocation? With violent crime again on the rise and white people being fully cognizant of who is responsible for the vast majority of violent crime, what are we supposed to do? Are we to just sit by and say nothing while our society unravels completely? Say nothing as our young and our elderly alike become the victims of angry young black men who care about nothing and no one and have no respect for the lives and property of other people? Are we just supposed to pretend that we don't know the truth about black criminality and continue to allow the Jewish media to report only white on black crime while completely ignoring truly horrific crimes committed by blacks against whites? I think my eyes were first opened wide to the problem of black criminality during the Los Angeles riots of 1992 which happened in the wake of the trial of the police officers accused of beating Rodney King. I will never forget my shock and horror as I saw the beating of Reginald Denny and other innocent white and asian citizens who were being dragged out of their cars and beaten to within an inch of their very lives for no other reason than they were not black. How could someone inflict a beating as severe as the one administered to Reginald Denny and then dance around his prostrate form in celebration of a job well done? I watched the looting and burning of businesses with a sense of sadness and rage as these unashamed black people robbed their neighbours and attempted to take the lives of dedicated police officers and firemen who were there just trying to do their jobs. Would white people react in the same manner given the same circumstances? I asked myself that question and the honest answer was no, I don't think they would......and they didn't. I saw no white faces among the looters nor among those destroying and burning businesses. What conclusion could I draw other than that black people are less honest, more violent and of lower moral character than the average white person? It is patently obvious that they are also more prone to impulsive behaviour without so much as a thought as to the consequences of their actions. Cameras focused on grinning black faces who mugged for the photographers while unashamedly loading up their arms with ill-gotten goods that were someone else's livelihood and I was embarrassed for them. But they weren't embarrassed. I didn't want to have this opinion of the black community but I couldn't deny what I had seen with my own eyes and I couldn't pretend that what I had seen hadn't disturbed me greatly because it had. No one wants to see human beings behaving in such a despicable manner and yet I couldn't delude myself as to the truth of what I was seeing. This view of the black community has only continued to be reinforced over the years. The O.J. Simpson trial was another glaring example. I don't think there is any doubt (at least among rational people who are honest with themselves) that O.J. murdered two people viciously and in cold blood and yet all the defense had to do was play the race card and suddenly uttering a racial pejorative became a greater crime than butchering two human beings to death. The majority black jury heard the same evidence we all heard and yet they were more interested in "socking it to the white man" than they were in seeing justice done. While the white community recoiled in horror at Mr. Simpson's acquittal, the black community was in celebration mode, high fiving each other and dancing in the streets. Had the situation been reversed and a white man had been acquitted of the unprovoked and brutal murder of two black people I doubt very much that the white community would have crowed about it. We would have been horrified, I am sure of it. We would have felt that it was a grave injustice and rightly so. All of this just made me realize that the majority of black people don't care about justice and making people accountable for what they do. They only care about getting back at whites in whichever way they can because we are the devils and we are responsible for their failure to thrive and succeed in America. After watching the news in the wake of Hurricane Katrina does anyone continue to harbour illusions about the black community? Or did they openly display who and what they are for the entire world to see? In white communities devastated by the disaster they pulled together and did what needed to be done without whining about the slow response from government. The behaviour of the mostly poor blacks in New Orleans was beneath contempt. You know it and I know it. But the media portrayed them as poor helpless victims yet again, just as I knew they would. The black citizens of New Orleans used this natural disaster to loot from their neighbours, shoot at rescue helicopters, escape from prison and to behave like wild animals without any hesitation or self-restraint. What happened in the Superdome while a hurricane raged outside is stomach churning and reprehensible and yet the black community is once again unapologetic. We all saw the pictures of the predominately black looters. Even black police officers were caught by cameras helping themselves to merchandise that didn't belong to them. Stealing necessities during a crisis is one thing, stealing televsion sets, name brand running shoes and DVDs is quite another. I'm sick of the media trying to protect the black community from the consequences of their behaviour by lying about it. I'm sick of everything being about race. I'm sick of white people being blamed for black failure. I'm sick and tired of being made to feel a collective guilt for things that happened before most of us were even a glint in our fathers' eyes. I never owned slaves and as far as I know none of my ancestors ever did either. I wasn't around during the time of the Jim Crow laws and will accept no blame for them. I don't, nor do any of the other members of the white community, bear any responsibility for black failure. They have done it to themselves and they need to take responsibility for it. They know they commit the majority of violent crimes. They know their teen pregnancy and illegitimacy rates are outrageous. They know that there is an anti-intellectualism in the black community that has led to not only their own academic failure and illiteracy but the lowering of public school standards nationwide. How can they honestly blame the white race and make accusations of institutional racism when the same people who are supposedly racist have been the ones to institute racial preferences? Who has been given the greatest "leg up" as far as preferences in college placement, financial assistance and in job quotas? It isn't the white community, I can tell you that. We have had to sit silently by while bright white students are overlooked for college placement in favour of less qualified black students. We aren't to say anything if a black person is given a job over a more qualified white person. Everyone knows that this "level playing field" isn't level at all. A truly colourblind society has no room for preferences based on race. Equal opportunity is one thing, equal outcome is something entirely different. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, two supposed "leaders" of the black community, do more harm than good by constantly fanning the flames of racism. Without the black anger directed at white Americans that they encourage and promote the two of them would be reduced to trying to earn an honest living. What is the answer? I don't know but I do know that integration has been a complete and utter failure. The two races can't live together in peace and harmony or it would have happened by now. If it were possible, we wouldn't see white families fleeing to the safety of the suburbs in huge numbers as blacks turn once decent neighbourhoods into combat zones. Whites don't flee because they hate black people. They flee for their safety and the safety of their children. Of course, the bleeding hearts will moan about intolerance and bigotry and hatred while living in their lily white neighbourhoods. They only approve of diversity and muliticulturalism as long as it isn't visited upon them personally. If most people were totally honest about it they would admit that they prefer to live around others just like them. I see it in big cities everywhere; neighbourhoods divided by ethnicity. Whites are more comfortable with white neighbours and the same is true of any other race or ethnicity. It was once perfectly acceptable to speak honestly about the obvious racial differences. Even Abraham Lincoln once talked about repatriating the slaves to Africa as being a good idea. But in these politically correct times white people are supposed to pretend that they don't see what they see when it comes to black criminality. They aren't supposed to be angry when whites are victimized by black crime and they aren't supposed to be angry when they are passed over for college placement or jobs. The black community can moan all they want about the unfairness of it all and what a poor lot in life they've been handed but I am about all out of sympathy. If the black community wants the respect and support of white Americans perhaps they ought to behave better. And the blacks who aren't engaged in criminal activity should be more vocal in condemning it. But I know anyone who speaks the truth will be condemned and written off as a hater by those who know the truth but refuse to accept and acknowledge it. White liberals will continue to patronize the black community and overlook their egregious behavior so that they can pat themselves on the back for being so tolerant and accepting. Sorry, but I won't be tolerant of such behaviour and I won't accept it without at least bringing it to people's attention. We would not accept this type of behaviour from any other group without condemning them for it and we shouldn't accept it from African Americans. They should not be above criticism when criticism is warranted. The black community needs to take a good hard look at themselves and condemn what is going on instead of greeting it with deafening silence. White people are fed up and eventually this simmering rage will erupt in unnecessary violence unless something changes. And that change has to come soon. American cities are quickly turning into battle zones where human life is cheap and snuffed out on a whim. It is not acceptable for decent people to be driven out of their neighbourhoods by rising crime rates, decreased property values and drugs being peddled on their street corners. As long as the media continues to make excuses for black criminality and demonstrate their obvious double standard where black/white issues are concerned nothing will change. White people need to stop putting their heads in the sand and pretending that the black race only differs from us in the amount of skin pigmentation. There are obvious and profound racial differences that we need to acknowledge and protect ourselves from. Anyone who doesn't see this has to be willfully blind or intellectually deficient.
